When Batman disappeared for a time, Duke joined a youth movement, inspired by the idea of becoming Robin in his absence. This "We Are Robin" group was short-lived, but Duke impressed Batman upon the hero's return to Gotham City. He made Duke his new partner but promised him a different destiny than previous Robins. Keeping his promise, Batman gave Duke a new costume and a new codename, and Duke became known as Signal. Unlike most of Batman's allies in Gotham City, Duke discovered he was a metahuman, possessing light-sensing powers. He is now uniquely positioned to defend his city in a way entirely different from any other member of the Batman Family.
