He has long, matted black hair and a bushy beard that hides most of his face. He has phenomenal strength. In the original version, Hagrid has a rather peculiar accent made of elision and distortion. Hagrid is very sensitive and sentimental by nature and cries easily. Hagrid most of the time wears a long coat made of beaver or bear skin or a large overcoat made of mole hair full of pockets. For "special occasions", he wears often a brown suit with an ugly yellow tie.

Hagrid has a preference for the most dangerous magical creatures possible, including a dragon he bred at home and named Norbert, a three-headed dog that guarded the Philosopher's Stone named Fluffy, an Acromantula he named Aragog, the hippogriff Buckbeak, and a few firecracker Scroutts. He is able to see Thestrals. In fact, he has little interest in docile magical creatures, although he does keep a somewhat cowardly hound named Fang as a pet.

Hagrid lives in a small, custom-built, one-room wooden house on the edge of the Forbidden Forest.
